Glossy factory doors call for a specialty bonding coat, since standard primer has nothing to hold on to. Paint works well on sound melamine and laminate, and on thermofoil only while its vinyl skin is still tight.

Melamine is a resin paper pressed onto particleboard. Its flat faces accept bonding primer readily, though the edges are the soft spot. Edge banding chips off to expose the particleboard underneath, so those spots are filled and sealed before any cabinet painting begins.
High-pressure laminate is tougher and behaves the same way. Both need a real scuff sanding to break the shine, because bonding primer grips a dull surface much better than a glossy one.
Thermofoil doors are MDF wrapped in a heat-fused plastic skin. Cabinet painting holds on it only while that sheet is fully glued down. When the vinyl begins to let go, new paint just rides on a layer that is still coming loose.
Hot, moist air slowly weakens the adhesive under that plastic. We always start our inspection beside the dishwasher and over the stove. First a corner curls, then a blister forms near an edge, and soon the whole skin peels.
Once peeling starts, the options narrow to two. One is warming the vinyl and pulling it away to raw MDF, practical for just a handful of doors. Or a new door is ordered and sprayed with the rest of the kitchen so the run matches. Ordering replacements is explained under refacing and new doors.
A bonding primer adds roughly $175 to $450 to a Toronto cabinet painting job. That covers an extra product and an extra coat, and these surfaces cannot do without it. Repairing chipped edges raises it slightly.
The primer also needs time. The next coat can follow the same afternoon, yet the bond keeps strengthening for most of a week. For that short stretch, the finished doors need gentle handling.
Melamine that flakes within twelve months almost always went without a bonding coat. Standard primer has nothing to grip on a factory finish, and the topcoat cannot make up for it.
