Golden oak came into Don Mills when owners replaced the original kitchens in the 1980s and 1990s. It is just as common in Parkwoods houses from the late 1950s that got the same update, and in Banbury-Don Mills homes that were refitted around the same years.
Water-based primer cannot hold back tannin. It shows up as brownish or pinkish blotches, often at the edges and rails, and extra coats of colour will not hide it.
A shellac-based primer seals the tannin in. It dries fast, sands easily and blocks the stain for good. Walnut and cherry call for that primer as well, so oak cabinet painting and cherry work share the same opening step. Any quote for oak that does not name a stain-blocking primer is missing a step.
Extra coats never bury oak pores on their own. Filling it takes two or three passes of grain filler, sanded between each, and leaves a door as smooth as a factory finish.
Skipping the filler keeps the wood texture visible beneath the new shade. Open grain suits certain rooms and lowers the cabinet painting bill, because filler adds time on each door. A raised-panel oak door uses a floating centre panel inside four frame pieces, and each part moves by itself. Toronto air is humid in summer and dry in winter once the furnace runs.
In midwinter the centre panel can pull back slightly and reveal a sliver of unpainted wood along its edge. It closes again by summer. This is the wood moving and not the cabinet painting failing. Painting the panel edges before the door is put together is not possible on an existing door, so we explain it at the visit instead of after the job.
New hardware is often the last step of oak cabinet painting, and it changes the room almost as much as the colour. Many oak kitchens in Parkwoods and Don Mills still carry their original brass knobs or bronze pulls. Some owners keep them and some switch to new hardware with the new colour.
If the new pulls use different spacing, the old holes are plugged and filled before primer. Options are listed under knobs, pulls and hinges.
Bronze knobs look warm against cream, sage and deep green, while brass suits navy and white. If the original hardware is staying, it comes off during cabinet painting, gets cleaned and goes back on only after the finish has hardened. That keeps the handle bases from pressing marks into the new coat.
Oak cabinet painting on a whole kitchen usually runs $2,800 to $6,000 in Toronto. Filling the pores moves a job toward the upper end, since each door takes longer. Per door, expect about $145 to $275.
Leaving the grain open keeps the cost down. New doors cost more, usually $3,500 to $11,000 for refacing. Treat those as city ranges only, and rely on your own written figure.
